Water tanks are everywhere on the Gold Coast — from the bushfire-prone hinterland properties at Tallebudgera Valley and Mount Tamborine where tank water is the primary supply, to the slimline tanks tucked beside houses in Mermaid Beach, to the BASIX-mandated tanks on every new build in Coomera and Pimpama. A tank slab looks simple, but it carries a serious load: a 22,500L tank weighs around 22.5 tonnes when full, sitting on roughly 9 square metres of concrete. Get the slab wrong and the tank tilts, the connections fail, and the steel feet of Colorbond tanks start to corrode. We build tank slabs sized properly for the actual load, the local soil, and the salt-laden Gold Coast air.
The Different Tank Slab Jobs Across the Gold Coast
Tank slab work on the Gold Coast splits into four very different categories, each with its own design considerations:
Hinterland Acreage Tanks
Properties in Tallebudgera Valley, Currumbin Valley, Springbrook, Mount Tamborine, Bonogin, Worongary and Mudgeeraba often run on tank water as the primary supply, supplemented by bore water. These owners typically install 22,500L, 30,000L or 45,000L tanks — sometimes two or three linked tanks for total capacity of 60,000L+. Slabs for these jobs are 4m x 4m up to 6m x 6m for tank clusters, with edge thickening to 200mm and SL82 or SL92 mesh.
Bushfire-Capacity Tanks
Properties in bushfire-prone hinterland areas — Tallebudgera Valley, Springbrook, Mount Tamborine and the rural-residential edges of Mudgeeraba and Bonogin — often need a minimum tank capacity for firefighting under the bushfire planning code, with a dedicated firefighting outlet. The slab sits in an accessible spot for fire crews, often near the driveway turnaround. The tank itself isn't different but the slab needs to handle the full load and be reachable on a fire truck access path.
BASIX and Sustainability Tanks in New Estates
Every new build in Coomera, Pimpama, Pacific Pines, Helensvale and the Hope Island estates includes a rainwater tank as part of the BASIX or sustainability requirements. These are typically 3,000L-5,000L tanks plumbed to toilets, laundry and outdoor taps, and the slab is small — around 1.5m x 1.5m to 2.0m x 2.0m. We often pour these as part of the post-handover landscaping when the original builder didn't include the slab.
Slimline Tanks for Narrow Beachside Blocks
Beachside Gold Coast suburbs — Mermaid Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Varsity Lakes, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach — have dense block patterns where the only spare space for a tank is a 600-900mm side passage. Slimline tanks are 2.0-2.4m long, 0.6-0.9m wide, and 1.8-2.2m tall, holding 1,500L-3,000L. The slab is small but needs to be perfectly level and properly anchored — a tilted slimline tank will lean and stress the rainhead and downpipe connections.

Coastal Salt and Slab Durability
Anywhere within roughly 3km of the surf line, salt-laden air is constantly depositing chlorides on every exposed concrete and steel surface. For tank slabs this matters in three ways. First, the steel mesh inside the slab needs deeper cover than inland — minimum 50mm rather than the standard 40mm. Second, the metal feet of Colorbond and steel tanks sit directly on the slab and rust faster in coastal air, so we usually recommend a thin polyethylene or rubber pad between the tank base and the concrete. Third, the slab top surface itself benefits from a penetrating sealer to slow chloride ingress — particularly worthwhile under poly tanks where rainwater splash on the slab edge is constant.
Sandy Soils and Drainage
Beachside Gold Coast soils are typically sandy and free-draining, which sounds good but creates two problems for tank slabs. First, sand under load can settle unevenly, especially after a wet/dry cycle — a full tank can drive one corner down 5-10mm if the base isn't properly compacted. Second, surface stormwater can wash sand out from the slab edge, leaving an undermined perimeter. We address this with 100-150mm of compacted roadbase under the slab, perimeter edge thickening to 200mm, and edge backfill with rock or concrete sleepers.
Pool Top-Up Tanks
The Gold Coast has more backyard pools per capita than almost anywhere in Australia, and pool owners increasingly install dedicated rainwater tanks for pool top-up — saving on town water bills and keeping the pool full through summer evaporation. These are typically 2,500-5,000L tanks plumbed directly to the pool's auto-fill line. The slab sits beside the pool pump shed or in a corner of the yard, and the size matches the standard 5,000L-tank slab spec.
